Practice Makes Perfect

Back in my discredited days, I would often rely on ‘inspiration’ and ‘drugs and alcohol’ to fuel my creative process. This was a bad idea, one that fomented two types of dependence and stunted my growth. I could blog about it endlessly, but maybe that’s for another day. These days, for me, ‘practice’ means doing something every day, or as close to it as possible. Whether that is making marks, looking in a focused manner at a work-in-progress in order to determine next steps, or writing a blog post as I set up my new website, the idea is to become dependent on action. Even if, like exercise, it’s sometimes hard, (or always hard) the idea is to feel the lack of action as something missing, and something needed.
